Close Textual Analysis

  1. There are many low-angled, close up shots in hip hop videos, to imply the artists’ power over their audience. The low angle gives them the power, because they look down on the audience and the close up gives status because it implies they’re important enough to have a frame to themselves.
  2.  there are many two shots of Nsg performing, whilst a woman stands irrelevantly next to him. There are four of these in the space of one minute, which are used to indicate how appealing and desired the male artists are, something which is meant to suggest status.
  3. This also represents women as irrelevant and meaningless.
  4. In hip hop music videos, a crowd is usually shown dancing or bouncing their arms in time to the beat of the song. This gives credibility to the song/artist, because it shows that people do like the song, which makes it easier for the audience to like the song.
  5.  In addition, the music video featuring the low angled shots emphasises  the movement of male bodies as well to counteract the movement of the females.
  6.  In conclusion, this can be named as a overall societal problem  that men and women are becoming more and more enslaved to a society where sexual objectification is the norm.

  7. Alternatively, there are many, many close ups in hip hop videos. These are useful for establishing the artist, but they also establish the ‘power’ or  importance of the artist. At the start, the camera goes between shots of lower angle shots to emphasises the females lower haft and medium close up shots of the male singers for facial identification. This allows the audience to understand what the objectives of the videos are. Through this we understand that the male singers are clearly the protagonist of the music video which emphasises that the males are in control, however, in the video the main focus are the females.
  8.  the general audience for hip hop is male, so applying the Male Gaze theory to videos ensures they keep viewers and attract new people into their audience.
  9. In addition, the Male Gaze theory is the perfect theory as the consumers of grime music is heavily male populated and targeted. the theory describes the tendency of works to assume a (straight) male viewpoint and in particular the tendency of works to present female characters as subjects of implicitly male visual pleasure and appreciation.
