Blog task: Media Factsheet 147 - Issues and Debates

Complete the following tasks using Media Factsheet 147: Issues and Debates. You'll find it in our Media Factsheet archive on the Media Shared drive: M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets.

1) Write a one-sentence answer to the initial questions in the factsheet:
  • Do fashion magazines contribute to the occurrence of eating disorders?
Many theorists believe that the media and its audience equally influence each other.
  • Do games make people behave violently?
It can be argued that the exposure of violence is triggering to many customers with violent tendencies.
  • Does advertising work?
Yes, the advertising does reinforce what ever agenda they are pursuing to express.
  • Does social media generate misogyny?
Yes, social media does generate misogyny.

2) Having read the two sides to the discussion, what is your opinion on the effects debate?

‘There is not a direct ‘cause and effect’ relationship between

media violence and real world violence- highly agree with this as social media is not highly realistic and at times can amplify whats going on in the real word.

3) Summarise the two sides of the example issues and debates on page 2 of the factsheet:
  • Twitter's influence on the news
  • New technology, privacy and Wikileaks
  • Social media and racism, sexism or threats online
News reporters and providers are increasingly receiving and using sourcing information, ideas and opinions from social media.
One way to look at this
is that it is a positive move that gives a voice to regular people and their thoughts and concerns however this also mean thats the voices of those who are not twitter based are silenced or ignored.
Sites such as Wikileaks and Snowden showed that personal information about our data such as our web history, our photos and
documents can be tracked can be viewed and used by governing bodies. This means our rights and privacy are more easily violated.
Through the use of social media, more minority group concerning issues such as diversity and representation have been on rise such as the vanity fair magazine cover of Caitlin Jenner.

4) What is your opinion on the growth of transgender issues in media debates?
There has been a clear increased attention and spotlight on the transgender community through the means of social media however there is still room of improvement and growth.
Also, despite the fact that using figures such as Caitlin Jenner is great, she may not be represent the struggles and concerns of the average transgender women in a western society.
